Scientific research and service activities of the Department of Plant Pests are realized within two laboratories:
Both laboratories are accredited in accordance with the requirements of SRPS ISO/IEC 17025: 2017.
The research of the Department of Plant Pests covers the following areas:
✔️ integrative approach in the study of insects and mites by a combination of methods of classical taxonomy, molecular biology and field-experimental studies of biology, ecology and biogeography of taxa;
✔️ study of the vector role of insects in the transmission of phytoplasmas, etc. plant pathogens of economic importance (epidemiological cycles);
✔️ study of the life cycles of insect vectors, preferences for the host plant and the impact on the epidemiology of transmission of phytoplasmas and other plant pathogens;
✔️ study of pathogen - insect vector - host plant interactions at the molecular level and molecular characterization of epidemiological pathways of phytoplasma transmission and movement, etc. pathogens (molecular epidemiology);
✔️ study of the influence of obligatory endosymbionts of phytophagous arthropods (eg Wolbachia) on the reproductive and evolutionary biology of natural host populations and potential applications in pest and disease vector control;
✔️ taxonomic and phylogenetic research of quarantine, invasive and economically important insects, mites and phytoplasmas of importance for agricultural production in Serbia;
✔️ development of "DNA barcoding" methods of molecular identification of quarantine and economically significant pests in agricultural production;
✔️ developing methods for forecasting the occurrence of plant pests in order to develop a strategy for their control in an environmentally friendly way;
✔️ study and elaboration of measures for control of plant pests and examination of efficiency and economy of their application;
✔️ study of biology, ecology, taxonomy and population genetics of insects and mites as potential agents for biological control of plant pests and invasive weeds (biological control).
The Department for Plant Pests is authorized by the Plant Protection Administration, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia for:
